  • What is SSL?

Secure Socket Layer (SSL) technology establishes a secure connection between your website and that of your user. Any files or information that is transmitted between these two points is encrypted. Customers want assurance that their credit card details, private information and transaction histories are kept private at all times. Having an SSL certificate gives you and your customers that assurance.

SSL certificates are a must to prevent malware from affecting your website. But more importantly, customer transactions must be kept completely hidden from hackers who want to steal their info. SSL should always be used for the following:

    • Credit card transaction on the web
    • Web logins, any online form, or any protected area on the website
    • Webmail & applications (Outlook Web Access, MS Exchange, etc.)
    • Virtualization & workflow applications
    • Between e-mail clients and email servers
    • File transferring over "https" & "ftp"
    • Hosting control panels login
    • All intranets
    • Network Logins, SSL VPN, VPN Access Servers, etc.
  • What level of security should I be purchasing?

Deciding which solution to procure is now easy. Below is an explanation of the 3 levels of SSL security as well as what are the recommended environments they are to be used on.

    LEVEL 1 DOMAIN VALIDATION

This is the most basic of SSL certification. Anyone who owns a domain name will be able to procure these types of SSL certificates. The CA will send a domain ownership confirmation e-mail to the person listed as the domain owner on the WHOIS public records, and once accepted, the order will be released. No company information is checked or displayed on the certificate, making level 1 domain validated SSL certificates easier for criminals to procure.

    LEVEL 2 ORGANISATION VALIDATION

This MID range SSL is a step up from the DV option and is perfect for public facing domains that are vulnerable to duplication attacks. The CA will carry out additional vetting of the organisation and individual applying for the certificate. This includes verifying the Company existence, address, telephone number, domain ownership and contact person before issuing the SSL. The vetting company name is displayed in a Trusted Site seal which can be added to your website to show all your visitors that the website is not only secure, but also managed by a legitimate Organisation who has been vetted by a trusted 3rd party

    Level 3 Extended Validation

Companies who take credit card information, have a login page or deal in the financial sector need to show their potential customers that they have gone through extra measures to ensure their safety online. Websites in this category, who do not have EV SSL, are extremely prone to phishing attacks and have a higher level of customer abandonment rates than their competitors who do. The CA will run a much more rigorous authentication process then Level 2 OV certificates and one can expect a longer turn around time, normally 5-7 working days. EV SSL is a high visibility SSL that turns the address/URL bar green shows visitors at first glance that the website is secure and safe.

    WHEN TO USE DV:

Situations where trust and credibility are less important. E.g. internal environments like, exchange or internal applications

    • Easy to obtain
    • Fast issuance
    • Use only for web-based applications what are not at risk for phishing or fraud
    • Don't use for public facing sites or sites that jhandle sensitive data, like logins or credit card check out pages.

    WHEN TO USE OV:

Public Facing websites dealing with less sensitive transactions

    • Stricter verification process than Level 1 DV certs
    • Company information is displayed to website visitors via a Trusted Site Seal
    • Provides a high level of TRUST about the company who owns the website
    • Does not offer the highest level trust like Level 3 EV SSL (Green address bar)

    WHEN TO USE EV:

Any site with a login page, a credit card checkout page or any site looking to secure sensitive data

    • Use EV SSL for the highest visible display
    • Green Address bar
    • Increase ROI and traction
    • Reduce abandonment rates
    • Show your visitors that you have gone through extra measures to ensure their safety online. This gives you credibility and installs higher levels of Trust.
  • SSL enrolment and verification

Level 1 – DV (Domain Validated SSL)

We’ve created this short guide to help you appreciate why our established authentication and verification procedures are a key part of building trust online, as well as a way to help you navigate the enrolment process for Domain Validated (DV) certificates

What you need to complete the enrolment.

    1. 2048 bit CSR file
    2. Corporate contact - Name / telephone number and e-mail address (Must be a full time employee of the Organisation)
    3. Technical Contact Name / telephone number and e-mail address (this is generally the person who will be installing the certificate)

DV - Level 1 Verification requirements

    1 STEP TO ISSUANCE

Domain Authentication only. This is done by sending an e-mail to the listed registrant contact on the WHOIS registry for the domain. Alternatively, you can also set a pre-approved e-mail account which you will be asked to select during the order enrolment.

Level 2 - OV (Organisation Validated SSL)

We've created this short guide to help you appreciate why our established authentication and verification procedures are a key part of building trust online, as well as a way to help you navigate the enrolment process for Organisation Validated (OV) certificates

What you need to complete the enrolment.

If the information below does not match EXACTLY to what’s listed on your Articles of Incorporation (aka Certificate of Corporation, Corporate Charter, Articles of Organization, Articles of Association, etc.) it may DELAY the issuance of your certificate. The issuing CA checks official records maintained with pre-authorized third-party databases (i.e. Government Agencies).

A Dun & Bradstreet number (D-U-N-S® Number) is NOT required; however, it will help us expedite your request. Also, please note the useful hints to the right of the fields.

    1. 2048 bit CSR file
    2. Organizational Information Legal Name – as per registration docs or DUNS records
      • Main Phone Number – a contactable 3rd party listed number
      • Physical Address as per registration
      • City and Province
      • postal code
    3. Corporate contact - Name / telephone number and e-mail address (Must be a full time employee of the Organisation)
    4. Technical Contact Name / telephone number and e-mail address (this is generally the person who will be installing the certificate)

OV - Level 2 Authentication requirements

    3 STEPS TO ISSUANCE

    1. Organisation Requirements
Vendor CA must verify the name, registration, and good-standing status of the Organisation listed in the CSR, with the appropriate Government Registration Agency in its country, state or (in some cases) city of jurisdiction.
    2. Domain Authentication
Vendor CA ensures the certificate domain name is registered to the enrolling Organisation's legal name in a publicly viewable WHOIS search. If the domain name is not registered to the enrolling Organisation’s legal name, alternative methods include: 1) establishing a ‘legal link’, 2) obtaining evidence of the right to use the domain name, or 3) additional documentation
    3. Verification Call
Before each certificate can be issued, a verification telephone call, using an independently obtained ‘third-party’ public telephone listing for the Organisation within the country listed on the CSR, must be completed with the Organisational or Technical Contact (if employed by the Organisation). If Vendor CA is unable to reach either Contact directly, either a voicemail is left on the contact’s personal voicemail or e-mail is sent with instructions on how to contact Vendor CA to complete the final verification

    Level 2 – Code Signing

What you need to complete the enrolment.

We’ve created this short guide to help you appreciate why our established authentication and verification procedures are a key part of building trust online, as well as a way to help you navigate the enrolment process for Code Signing (CS) certificates.

    2 STEPS TO ISSUANCE

    1. Organisational Authentication
Vendor CA must verify the name, registration, and good-standing status of the Organisation listed in the CSR, with the appropriate Government Registration Agency in its country, state or (in some cases) city of jurisdiction.
    2. Verification Call
Before each certificate can be issued, a verification telephone call, using an independently obtained ‘third-party’ public telephone listing for the Organisation within the country listed on the CSR, must be completed with the Organisational Contact

Level 3 - EV (Extended Validated SSL)

we've created this short guide to help you appreciate why our established authentication and verification procedures are a key part of building trust online, as well as a way to help you navigate the enrolment process for Organisation Validated (OV) certificates

Your Organisation must be registered with the appropriate Government Registration Agency in its country or state.Domain Authentication
    2. Operational Existence
Symantec must verify that the enrolling Organisation has the ability to engage in business. Operational Existence is satisfied if the Organisation has been registered and in existence for over3 years. Alternative documentation may be requested for organisations registered for less than 3 years
    3. Address Verification
Symantec verifies the physical business address listed on a certificate enrolment. This must be a physical address, and not a P.O. Box, Lock Box, or care of address.
    4. Telephone Verification
An independently obtained ‘third-party’ public telephone listing is used to find a telephone number for the Organisation at the verified address
    5. Domain Authentication
Symantec ensures the certificate domain name is registered to the enrolling Organisation’s legal name in a publicly viewable WHOIS search
    6. Confirmation of Employment
The Organisational Contact must be verified to work for the Organisation requesting the certificate AND be authorised to obtain an EV Certificate on the behalf of the Organisation. Note: contractors or temporary staff are not allowed to obtain EV certificates
    7. Verification Call
Before each certificate can be issued, a verification telephone call, using an independently obtained ‘third-party’ public telephone listing for the Organisation within the country listed on the CSR, must be completed with the Organisational Contact. If Symantec is unable to reach the Contact directly, either a voicemail is left on the contact’s personal voicemail or an e-mail is sent with instructions on how to contact Symantec to complete the final verification
    8. Acknowledgement of Agreement
Complete the Extended Validation Subscriber Agreement (Organisational Contract) online. In rare instances, a signed form may be required and instructions will be provided.
